Outside In Song of the Week (Happy Birthday, Dirty Harry!)

Happy Birthday,
Clint Eastwood

My favorite actor is 78 years old today.  Known for his most famous role as "Dirty Harry," Clint has done it all at the movies (Comedies, Cowboy movies, Dramas, etc).  He even starred in a movie musical back in the 1960s.  Yes, Clint briefly had a singing career.

Emily Minnigerode, Teacher of the Year

Great article about a special education teacher named Emily Minnigerode called "She Finds Humor in Everything."  Minnigerode teaches students who are autistic at the Millersville Elementary School in Maryland.  She got her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Maryland in College Park.  She did her student teaching at Millersville.  She recently won the county school system's teacher of the month award for May.

Congrats, Miss Minnigerode!  And thanks!

Trivia about "Autism: The Musical"

In the documentary, Autism: The Musical, five children with varying degrees of autism are spotlighted.  Three of the children are offspring of famous musicians.  Henry is the son of rock legend Stephen Stills.  The twins, William and Trevor, are the sons of Brian O'Neal, leader of the Bus Boys.  They appear in the deleted scenes of the documentary's DVD.

Harvey Korman RIP

Sad news.  For the second time within a week, a famous TV comic legend has died.  Harvey Korman of The Carol Burnett Show has passed away due to complications of an abdominal aortic aneurysm that he suffered four months ago.  He even had several surgeries.  Korman also starred in the Mel Brooks classic movie Blazing Saddles where he played a bad guy called Hedley Lemarr but everyone called him "Hedy" by mistake.  He also starred in other Mel Brooks movies as well.

I am sad to learn about his death because I grew up watching him on TV and in the movies.  He had great chemistry with Tim Conway.

Annette's 50 today.  She turned down the role of Catwoman in Batman Returns because she was pregnant.  She's done other movies like Bugsy, American Beauty, and Running with Scissors.

Autism Rights Movement!

An interesting article by New York Magazine about the Autism Rights Movement.  It's great to see a lot of people taking a stand and raising awareness about the autism spectrum.  Will society be more accepting of us in the long run?

It's been tough for me to have a career in anything.  Every job I get is always entry-level and no room for promotion.  I have many skills, but everyone says that I have to network or volunteer to get ahead.  I've done both and got no results.

Kindergartener with Asperger's Gets Banished

Last week, a five-year-old kindergartener was voted out of his class "Survivor" style by his own classmates.  The teacher authorized this after the student was sent to the principal's office for humming and eating his paper.  The mother of the child complained and the teacher has been removed from that class and reassigned.

Currently, the child is in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

Personally, I find this disgusting.  The teacher is allowing other kids to be intolerant of other kids' differences.  That is bad.  A teacher is supposed to teach tolerance and acceptance of others, not discrimination.  This teacher shouldn't be teaching young kids.

Paul Gets the Degree

Congratulations to Sir Paul McCartney!

Yale University has awarded Paul an honorary Doctor of Music degree.  The reason was that he "awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock, roll, rhythm, and blues."

Nice to see Paul get an honorary degree!

Laugh-In's Dick Martin RIP

Last night, TV veteran/comic Dick Martin passed away in Santa Monica, California, due to respiratory problems.  Martin was one half of the comedy team Rowan and Martin who hosted the hit show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In during the late 1960s to the early 1970s.  He was 86 years old.

Laugh-In was famous for these quotes: You bet your bippy!, Look that up in your Funk & Wagnall's!, and Sock it to me!

Martin started off as a neighbor on The Lucy Show in the early 1960s before Laugh-In.  His partner Dan Rowan passed away back in 1987.  In later years, Martin sometimes appeared on the Newhart sitcom during the 1980s, which he sometimes directed.

He'll be greatly missed.  I loved watching him on TV when I was little.

RIP, Dick!

Thanks, Pennsylvania!

Pennsylvania is the nation's first state in getting $20 million from Medicaid to help autistic adults.  The services will help them find a job or a caregiver.

Great news!  Now, if all the other states will get this assistance too!

Right here in Massachusetts, it's been tough for me in finding the right job.  The employer I have now is paying me a small salary and doesn't let me do much at the office.  I am very talented at writing and using computer programs.  I am also good at journalism and presentations.  However, I don't get to do all that.  Only a fraction.

They complain about my lack of experience and I tell them how do I gain experience if no one hires me to do the work that will get me the desired result.  It's been like this for a long time.

Tyler in Rehab

This week, Aerosmith frontman and lead singer Steven Tyler checked himself in a rehab hospital in California.  Friends of the 60-year-old rocker say that it's because of his relationship with a party animal girlfriend that he's been seeing for the last 2 years.

Also, Tyler has had health problems in recent years: Throat surgeries, a bout with Hepatitis C, and two foot surgeries.  Before that, his wife of 17 years left him for a much younger man.

Tyler had been sober for the last 20 years after doing a stint in rehab with his fellow band mates during the 1980s.

Get well soon, Steven!

Clint Says No Dirty Harry

At the Cannes Film Festival, Clint Eastwood says there is no new Dirty Harry movie in the works.  The famous actor/director is promoting his latest film, Changeling, a missing-child drama starring Angelina Jolie.  Jokingly, Clint pointed at Jolie who is also at the festival and introduced her as "Dirty Harriett."

Clint, who is turning 78 years old on May 31, says that Harry is now too old to be working at a police department.

High Flying Heart Risk, Thanks to Sleep Apnea?

A recent Australian study says that people with severe obstructive sleep apnea may be at a greater risk for heart trouble.  Researchers looked at both healthy people and people with the sleep disorder during a simulated flight.

The ones with the obstructive sleep apnea showed higher heart rates, physiological stress, and a need for more oxygen.  Researchers are wondering if people with the disorder should travel with supplementary oxygen like others who have lung problems and need oxygen.

Holy Conflict in Minnesota

Is the priest overreacting or is he just showing concern for the attendees at his church?  In Bertha, Minnesota, a Catholic priest has filed a restraining order against the parents of a severely autistic 13-year-old boy.  The priest claims that the boy is a danger to other members of the church because of recent incidents because the boy is over six feet tall and weighs 225 pounds.  He did offer accommodations to the parents, but they refused because they know how to take of their child by sitting on him in church and leaving before Sunday service ends.

Local advocate organizations are on the side of the parents and want the bishop to have the restraining order rescinded.

Not all autistic children are alike.  Is there a danger?  The autistic boy did accidentally bump into a few people while exiting the church and, in one occasion, injured a young girl.

Happy Birthday,
Janet Jackson!

Back in the summer of 1986, I was a disc jockey in a tiny radio station in Woburn, Massachusetts.  I used to play this song all the time.  My listeners loved it as much as I did!

Ajax The Wonder Dog

Autism assistance dogs are being used to help children with autism and Asperger's Syndrome.  Although the cost is expensive ($13,000), the benefits are priceless.

That's the case for Matthew and his autism assistance dog, Ajax.  At the age of three, Matthew was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.  Ajax nuzzles Matthew if he gets anxious and keeps him from wandering off.  As a result, Matthew's meltdowns have become less frequent.

Good Dog, Ajax!

My Favorite Monkee has Asperger's

What a surprise for me!  This made feel good all over!

Zena Hawley, a reporter for This is Derbyshire news website, interviewed former Monkee Peter Tork in her article, Tork Time With Former Monkees Stalwart Peter. His band Shoe Suede Blues will be doing a mini tour of the United Kingdom at the end of May.

During this interview, Peter revealed that a few years ago he was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome!

I'm thrilled  to hear about this!  It's nice to have something in common with my favorite Monkee!

When Dianna Met John

In the essay "On Meeting A Famous Author (Well, To Me, Anyway),"  Dianna Heitz recounts her meeting John Elder Robison, author of the memoir Look Me in The Eye: My Life with Asperger's.  She interviewed him and was astonished by the fact that she got to meet him in person.

Dianna was very determined to meet him that she willingly drove seven hours from Washington, DC, to Amherst, Massachusetts where his house is.  She was thrilled to interview him.

Happy Birthday,
Bono!

The frontman of U2 is 48 today.  Can he save the World?  Who knows?

I love U2.  It was here in Boston where U2 first played in America at the Paradise Rock Club in 1979.  It's been considered one of the best concerts in Boston music history.

"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2

May 11, 1986 ...

,,, was my Graduation Day from Emerson College.  The ceremony was okay.  I was so glad to get that piece of paper.  The four years there was worth it.

Then, I had to contend with my dysfunctional family.  It was also Mother's Day.  I remember giving my mother a card, but she, my father, my brother John, and my sister Vera (my brother James couldn't make because of work) gave me a hard time about my not being able to pay for my college tuition.  They complained about that the whole weekend.  Very frustrating.

I couldn't stand still for pictures because I wanted to go to the reception, and they were furious that I had to give my gown back right after I walked across the stage and received my degree in Theatre Arts and Radio Communications.  They should have told me before the ceremony that they wanted a picture of me wearing the gown.  I told them that they had several opportunities to take pictures of me before the ceremony, but they said they are supposed to photograph me after the ceremony and not before.

When I told them about the reception that Emerson was doing for the graduates which was a couple of blocks away at the Park Plaza Hotel which is a good place to take pictures, they demanded of me to stay still for pictures right there on the sidewalk in front of the Wang Center.  They were calling me "immature."  I got fed up and walked over to the reception.

It was a whole day and night of arguing over the stupidest things.  They accused me of not caring for their feelings.  I guess they didn't realize that Graduation Day was my day in the sun, not theirs.  They resented the fact that I made a major accomplishment.  They were not even thrilled that I had just gotten a job at a radio station after graduation.  They were more concerned about how much money I would be making at this job.  No utterance of "Congratulations for getting a new job, Yvonne" came from them.

I was so glad that I was able to move into an apartment in Boston the day after graduation.  There was no way in the world that I was going to move back home to Maryland where they are.  I don't have a reason to live with them in the same state.

I still feel that way today 22 years later.  I rather be here in Boston away from them.

The real sad fact is when I told them that I had Asperger's Syndrome they were disbelieving, despite the fact I had problems with socializing with people and career problems (that radio job turned into a career disaster: no salary for me and it went off the air a few months after I started there).  My mother cursed me out on the phone saying "Don't believe those doctors.  They don't know anything."

I said back, "Says the woman who married a dentist."

It took awhile for my father and my siblings to realize it.  My mother still doesn't believe it.  I shouldn't be surprised because she doesn't believe that  my nephew has ADHD and my niece (my nephew's younger sister) has Social Anxiety Disorder.  She rather calls us "crazy" than accept the fact that we have neurological disorders.

In case you're wondering, I did mail her a Mother's Day card this year.

Annapolis Has Autism Awareness

A newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, called The Capitol has a well written article titled Autism Can Strike Any Family.  It goes in depth about the situation now with autism and the different types of autism/Asperger's out there.

The article calls for early and aggressive treatment intervention for children with autism.  It's written by a clinical psychologist named Dr. Scott E. Smith who recommends families to get in contact with the Bethesda-based Autism Society of America.  http://www.autism-society.org

I only wish this organization existed when I was going to Leland Jr. High and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda during the 1970s and 1980s.  I would have gotten the much needed help I wanted at that time, even though I didn't know I was autistic.

The Fonz Writes a New Children's Book

Fellow Emersonian, Henry Winkler (The Fonz) has a new Hank Zipzer book out called The Life of Me, which hit the bookshelves back on May 1.  It is the 14th book of the Hank Zipzer children's book series that Winkler co-wrote with Lin Oliver.  Hank Zipzer is a boy with a learning disability who faces challenges with school assignments but manages to persevere.  The subject matter is close to Winkler because he was 31 years old when he was diagnosed with dyslexia.

Tomorrow on Mother's Day, Henry Winkler will be in Andover at the Old Town Hall on Main Street at 2 p.m.  He will also be in Cambridge at the Porter Square Bookstore at 5:30 p.m.

Too bad I already have plans tomorrow because I won't be able to make to the two events.

Check out the article and interview with Henry in the Andover Townsman because Henry mentions that his books attract a lot of children with Asperger's Syndrome.

New Movies I've Seen: Iron Man and Speed Racer

It's not often that I go out to see a new movie, but in the past week, I saw Iron Man last Saturday night and Speed Racer just last night.  I really enjoyed myself see these two movies.

Iron Man
is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.  Robert Downey delivers a great movie playing Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man.  It was funny and exciting, just like the comic book.  Terrance Howard was great as James Rhodes (Rhodey), Iron Man's sidekick.  Jeff Bridges as bad guy Obidiah Stane was good too.  Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony's secretary Pepper Potts was outstanding.  Director Jon Favreau appears as Tony's chauffeur, Happy Hogan, was also fun.

Speed Racer is based on the classic 1960s TV show of the same name.  I loved watching that cartoon while I was growing up in the 1970s.  They were able to recreate the fun and adventure of the TV.  Sometimes, the CGI special effects were a bit overwhelming, but I didn't go into a sensory overload while watching it.  The suspense was great.  John Goodman was terrific playing "Pops" Racer, the father of Rex, Speed, and Spridle.  Emile Hirsch as Speed was perfect for the part, right down to the red socks.  Matthew Fox as Racer X (Rex Racer) was good at playing cool.  Also, Christina Ricci plays Speed's girlfriend Trixie to perfection.

A Message From My Cat, Storm

And now, I turn over the keyboard to my cat, Storm.  She wants to tell everyone a message.  Go ahead, Storm.

Thanks, Mom!  Hi, Everybody! My name is Storm.  I wanted to tell everyone that Dr. Doom tried to shoot me last Saturday!  He was pointing a gun at me!  He had this crazy look in his eyes!  I was so scared that I jumped off my mom's lap and ran for it!

Dr. Doom is a very scary person!  Don't let him appear on your computer screen because he may shoot you!  If you see him, run for your life!

Storm, Dr. Doom is just a comic book character.  He wouldn't harm real people and cats.

No, Mom!  He had that gun pointing at me!  He looked real!

Storm, don't cry!  Dr. Doom won't find you here.

Mother Fights for Justice

The Tennessee Justice Center is awarding Lisa Addison with the Mother of the Year award in Nashville today.  Addison has been fighting for the right health care and schooling for her son.

Six months ago, her son's doctor told her that his previous diagnoses(ADHD, PTSD, depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, development disorders, and familial tremors) were wrong and should be tested for Asperger's Syndrome.  However, the doctors qualified to do the tests do not take TennCare insurance.

A center for autistic children and their families is opening in June in Carlsbad, California.  It will have three divisions: research, educational research, and family services.  The center is called the National Center for Autism Research and Education (NCARE).

The Bickford family are thrilled about the center opening up.  They have two sons with Asperger's Syndrome.

Outside In Song of the Week

This song was written by Cat Stevens back in the 1960s.  Cat now calls himself "Yusuf Islam" these days.  It's the song that launched his career.  The band who performed the song was the band Decca Records signed on instead of the Beatles back in the early 1960s.

Many years later, Cat Stevens recorded the song himself in the movie called Rushmore, but everyone remembers the original version.

Kyle Wants to Build Super-Train!

A fifth grader in Tennessee named Kyle who has Asperger's Syndrome is more interested in building a super-efficient train than learning about plant cells.  At the Pi Beta Phi Elementary school he attends, he is attending speech classes to aid him in understanding his peers' emotions and body language.

His older brother Michael doesn't think less of Kyle after the diagnosis.  In fact, he accepts Kyle as who he is.

Kyle is coping with his diagnosis very well.  His intellect has helped him qualify for the state level of the National Geographic Geography Bee.  He is the only one of nine fifth graders to accomplish that.

Congrats, Kyle!  And Good Luck!
