The Return of Dr. Alan Quartermaine (Sort of)!

I just read in the latest issue of TV Guide that Stuart Damon will be returning to General Hospital on March 8 as a ghost.  He'll be haunting the Quartermaine mansion in the near future.

I'm glad that they're keepin him around!

Another Classic Alan and Monica scene from the 1980s, "Red Rubber Bats!"

Future Horizons Publisher in the Dundalk Eagle!

R. Wayne Gilpin, Publisher of Future Horizons, Inc., is in the latest issue of the community newspaper called The Dundalk Eagle.  The article is called "Publisher Focus on Autism."  It tells the origin of how Gilpin started publishing books about autism and Asperger's Syndrome.  When his son Alex was diagnosed with autism, Gilpin printed up a collection of stories about living with a child with autism in one book.  He made 100 copies of it and went to a conference with them.  He sold all of them in just two days!  He printed up more copies and they were sold in two weeks.

Gilpin is a former resident of Dundalk, Maryland.

AANE VP In The Washington Post!

Vice President of the Asperger Association of New England, Phil Schwarz, is mentioned in the Washington Post article called "Gifted? Autistic? Or Just Quirky?"  Check it out.  It's very interesting.  I'm thrilled to see someone I know featured in my old hometown newspaper.

Loved The Love Show! All You Need Is Cirque!

Last week, I went to Las Vegas and checked out Cirque du Soliel's Love Show, which is a tribute to the Beatles' music of the 1960s.  The show had everything: ballet dancing, rollerblading, acrobatics, tap dancing, circus parades, somersaults, Volkswagon Beetles and flying beds!  The special effects and the video screen were also wonderful.  The show ran for 90 minutes and was definately a magical mystery tour.

The stage was a full 360 degrees with moveable parts, trap doors and elevator lifts.  It had a life of its own as transformed from song to song.   The videos featured actually footage of the Beatles.   Each musical number was an interpretation of the 1960s and the career of the Beatles.

At the end of the show, the audience was on their feet and cheering.  A great show.

Hot Wheels! Ghost Rider Burns Up The Box Office!

The latest Marvel Comics character to have his own movie is "Ghost Rider" starring Nicholas Cage, who happens to be a comic book fan himself (he even named his own son Kal-El after Superman's Kryptonian name).  It starts with how Johnny Blaze makes a deal with the devil (played by Peter Fonda of "Easy Rider" fame).   Johnny obviously doesn't know what he was getting into until it's too late.  The pact he makes wrecks havoc in his love life making him leave his childhood sweetheart Roxanne (played by Eve Mendes).

Seeing Johnny's transformation into the Ghost Rider is spectacular sight as he goes from flesh and blood to skeleton with flames around his skull and dressed in leather and chains.  Even his motorcyle is transformed.  What's even good about this movie that it acknowledged the orignial Ghost Rider, Carter Slade (played by Sam Elliott).  The first Ghost Rider series was a western in the 1950s and 1960s before being updated in the 1970s.

Action sequences were good as well as the special effects.  This comic book fan had a good time seeing this movie.

Happy Birthday, Baby Beatle!

Happy 64th Birthday, George Harrison!
(1943-2001)

Tonight, I went to the Paradise Lounge and celebrated the youngest Beatle's 64th birthday with fellow listeners of WZLX's "The Breakfast With The Beatles."  It was great seeing Cha-Chi Loprete, the host of the radio show.  I've known him since my days as a WBCN listener line volunteer (way back in 1994).  It was a great reunion for us because we hadn't seen each other since I left WBCN in 2000.

It was a fun event.  I won a DVD of the documentary, "The US verses John Lennon."  I was the one who had the answer to the trivia question, "Which song did both The Beatles and The Beach Boys cover?"  The answer was Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music."  Also, Cha-Chi gave me a "Breakfast With The Beatles" T-Shirt just before I won the DVD.

At the end of the party, I also got a WZLX 20th anniversary desk clock.  Overall, I had a great evening, despite the fact I was still weary from my plane trip from Las Vegas on Friday.  Yes, I did see the Cirque Du Soliel "Love" Show and also saw the movie Ghost Rider while in Vegas.

I'm heading out of town on Tuesday afternoon (2/20) to Las Vegas.  I will be meeting with family who are also visiting.  I am going to check out the Cirque De Soleil show called "Love," which features the music of the Beatles, my favorite rock band.  I will be seeing that Thursday night this week.

Two Genetic Links Found!

A recent large-scale study of families with autistic children discovered two genetic links that causes autism spectrum disorders to occur.  They are called Chromosome 11 and Neurexin 1.  These are the first results of a scan of the world’s largest collection of DNA samples from families with autistic children.  The study took five years to find these two links.

1,200 families participated in this study.

Aspies Express Love Differently!

In an opinion piece called "Love and Loneliness" in The Advocate, a college student named Rober Moran writes about the fact that people with Asperger's are capable of loving just because we are human too.

Great writing, Robert!  And Thanks!

60 Minutes Does A Report on Autism on Sunday 2/18!

Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes" will be presenting her story about an ongoing research about early detection of autism in infants at the Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (M.I.N.D.) Institute of the University of California at Davis.  Dr. Sally Ozonoff at the Institute is studying 200 babies from birth to determine the earliest signs of autism in a child.  Her findings include less interaction, less eye contact and paying more attention to objects than people.

Dr. Ozonoff and her colleague, Dr.  Sally Rogers, believe that early intervention and behavior treatment will make a big difference in the lives of children with autism.

Please, watch "60 Minutes" this Sunday!

Asperger Teen Competes for Youth of the Year!

In Annapolis, Maryland, a 17 year old high school senior with Asperger's Syndrome named Christopher Coard is vying for the Youth of the Year Award.  The Boys and Girls Club where he lives have been very supportive of him and helped direct him towards his dreams and goals.

The winner goes on to compete with other Youth of the Year winners from other counties in Maryland.  State winner then goes to compete with other state winners until a national winner is declared.  That winner gets a scholarship and visits the White House and meets the President.

Good Luck, Christopher!

New Jersey in 1st Place!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New Jersey ranks in first  place in the prevalence of autism and related disorders.  In The New York Times article titled, "An Autism Anomaly, Partly Explained," New Jersey has a better awareness of autism, good record keeping and a wider variety of services available for children with autism and related disorders.

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has suggested that other states that were part of their 14 state study should follow New Jersey's example when identifying autism  in children.

Keep up the good work, New Jersey!

Tae Kwon Do is a Godsend

Two boys with Asperger's Syndrome have completed a Tae Kwon Do course earning their black belts.  They have shown improvement in paying attention and staying focus.  The classroom environment was a non-judgemental setting.

Congratulations to Ian and Collin!  Great work, guys!

The Road To Mars

Joey Show, a boy with Asperger's Syndrome, wants to be an astronaut.  He already has a mentor, an engineer from NASA, helping him already.  He met his mentor, Gabe Gabrielle, through the Able Trust's e-Mentoring program, launched in 2005 for students with disabilities.

Good luck, Joey!  Reach for the stars!

A Beautiful Artist

The Boston Globe has done a profile about artist Paul Laffoley who happens to have Asperger's Syndrome.  He has been doing contemporary art since 1965 and even once worked for Andy Warhol.  His artwork has themes about religion, comic books, astrology, time travel, philosophy and black holes.

Currently, the Kent Gallery in New York has his work in an exhibit called "Mind Physics,  " which is a collection of his works from the mid-1960s to the present.

Not Predisposed To Violence

A clinical psychologist wrote an excellent editorial called "Asperger's Isn't To Blame" in a local New Hampshire newspaper regarding Elijah Wallace and his difficulties about living with Asperger's Syndrome.  Not understanding the social connection between others causes a lot of problems in relationships, at school and the workplace.

Also, Elijah's father is interviewed in the article called "Father: Syndrome Haunts 'Good Kid.'"  Very informative because it does detail how hard it is for Elijah.

1 In 150!

According to this recent report, more than half a million 8 year olds have some form of autism in the United States.  That means that 1 in 150 may have an autism spectrum disorder.

As it get easier to identify autism in children and adults, the numbers change.  It used to be 1 in 166.  Are we a whole nation of autistics?  Time will tell.

My Prediction Came True!

Thursday night of this week (February 1), I sent an e-mail to my friends, Jan and Susan Huffman, with my prediction for Groundhog's Day.  I said that the Groundhog would not see his shadow.

And on Friday morning, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow.  That means an early spring is coming.

At their annual Groundhog Day party today, Jan and Susan awarded me with the Bill Murray DVD titled, "Groundhog Day."  I was the only one whose prediction was right.

Now, I'm off to the microwave to make the popcorn.

Look at Augusten Burroughs' Brother in the Eyes!

John E. Robison, the brother of Running with Scissors author Augusten Burroughs, has written his own memoir, Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's.  John was formerly a roadie for Kiss, the rock band.  John left home just before Augusten was forced to live with the Finch Family.   I expect this to be an interesting memoir since John was involved with a very famous rock band.

Just a reminder: Augusten's memoir was made into a movie that came out last year starring Annette Benning.

Currently, Augusten whose real name is Chris Robison lives right next door to John these days.

Safety Editorial

Julie Berry is a columnist for the Metro West Daily News in Massachusetts.  She wrote an editorial about the recent tragedy at the Lincoln-Sudbury High School regarding a student with Asperger's Syndrome being held for alledgedly stabbing a student to death.  She advises everyone not to overreact or stereotype.
