Science Daily reports that the researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Texas have created genetically engineered mice that show symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). The mice show that their ability to socialize have been limited but not their intelligence.
The researchers believe the mice are models to show how specific defects in neural develop may lead to autism. The mice show a mutation in a protein gene called neuroligin-3. This type of mutant protein has been identified in some people with autism spectrum disorders.
