I was so distracted by the death of Heath Ledger that I forgot to mention that yesterday was the 40th Anniversary of the first episode of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. It was a comedy variety program on NBC that was placed on Monday nights to fill the 8 p.m. time slot, recently vacated by the canceled Man from U.N.C.L.E. show on January 22, 1968. The show ran until 1973. It was a number 1 show during its run.
There was a regular cast and tons of guest stars that appeared every week. Even Richard Nixon showed up for an episode to say "Sock it to me."
